What is blood sugar?

Blood sugar (glucose) is your body's main fuel source — it's what powers everything from your brain to your muscles. When you eat, especially carbohydrates, glucose enters your bloodstream. Your body releases insulin, a hormone that acts like a key, unlocking your cells so they can absorb and use that glucose for energy. This process — blood sugar rising after eating, then insulin bringing it back down — is completely normal and healthy when it happens gradually.

Why stable blood sugar matters for metabolic health

Regulating your blood sugar really means managing how much glucose is circulating in your bloodstream at any given time, so your body can handle it and put it to use as fuel. When there's more glucose than your body needs in the moment, the excess gets stored as fat. Over time, repeated blood sugar spikes also force your body to release more and more insulin to manage the sugar, and your cells can become less responsive to insulin's signals — a condition called insulin resistance.

The effects show up in ways you can feel day to day: low energy, headaches, inflammation, mood swings, and stubborn cravings. Stable blood sugar, by contrast, keeps your energy steady throughout the day, reduces cravings, supports healthy weight management, improves mood and focus, and protects your long-term metabolic health. This is why blood sugar balance isn't just about avoiding a sugar crash — it's foundational to how well your entire metabolism functions.

Why is it especially important during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, insulin resistance naturally increases in the second and third trimesters to make sure your baby gets enough glucose. But if your blood sugar is already on a roller coaster before pregnancy or early on, this natural insulin resistance can tip into gestational diabetes.

Keeping blood sugar balanced helps prevent gestational diabetes, supports healthy weight gain, and reduces your risk of preeclampsia. It also protects your baby — prolonged high blood sugar is linked to excessive growth (macrosomia) that can complicate delivery, low blood sugar in the baby right after birth, higher risk of childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes later in life, and respiratory difficulties at birth. Stable blood sugar helps ensure your baby gets a consistent, healthy supply of nutrients without these added risks.

What impacts blood sugar?

When blood sugar spikes too high and crashes too low, it creates a roller coaster effect. This tends to happen when you eat a high amount of carbohydrates alone without protein, fat, or fiber to slow digestion, when you go too long without eating (skipping meals or waiting 5+ hours between them), or when you have a large sweet treat on an empty stomach. These spikes are what make you feel tired, "hangry," foggy, and craving more sugar within an hour or two.

To understand why pairing carbs with protein, fat, and fiber makes such a difference, it helps to know how your body actually handles each of these macronutrients.

How your body handles protein, fat, and carbohydrates

Everything you eat eventually breaks down into one of three building blocks — amino acids, fatty acids, or glucose — and each is handled by your body differently.


Protein → amino acids. Protein breaks down into amino acids, which your body uses to build and repair muscle, make enzymes and hormones, and support essentially every function that keeps you running. Unlike fat, your body doesn't have a dedicated way to store protein for later — so if you eat more protein than you need in the moment, your liver strips away the nitrogen portion of the amino acid (excreted through your kidneys) and converts what's left into either glucose for energy or fat for storage. Protein also has a minimal effect on blood sugar — it digests slowly and doesn't cause the spikes that naked carbs can, which is part of why pairing it with carbs at meals helps keep things stable.

Less beneficial sources: processed deli meats, breaded/fried proteins, protein bars/shakes high in added sugar

Fat → fatty acids. Fat breaks down into fatty acids, which your body uses for energy, to build cell membranes, and to produce hormones — including reproductive hormones, which rely on adequate fat intake to function properly. Not all fats behave the same way: monounsaturated fats (like olive oil and avocado) and polyunsaturated fats (like omega-3s from fish, walnuts, and flaxseed) support hormone health, reduce inflammation, and are linked to better metabolic outcomes. Saturated fat, in excess, is more likely to contribute to inflammation and insulin resistance over time — though some saturated fat is a normal part of a balanced diet. Whatever type, any fat you eat beyond what your body needs right away gets stored in fat tissue for future energy use.

Less beneficial sources (in excess): fried foods, processed snack foods, fatty cuts of processed meat, foods high in trans fats

Carbohydrates → glucose. Carbohydrates break down into glucose, your body's preferred quick-energy source. Once glucose enters your bloodstream, insulin helps distribute it to where it's needed — your brain, liver, kidneys, and muscles — either to be used immediately or stored as glycogen (a kind of energy reserve) in your liver and muscles for later. Once those glycogen stores are full, any additional glucose gets converted and stored as fat instead.

Not all carbs affect your blood sugar the same way. Cellular carbs — whole foods like vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains — still have their natural cell structure intact, which includes fiber. That fiber slows down digestion, so glucose enters your bloodstream more gradually. Acellular carbs — processed foods like white bread, crackers, and pretzels — have been stripped of that cell lining during processing, so the glucose they contain hits your bloodstream much faster, making them more likely to cause a spike.

How can you keep blood sugar stable?

Macro pairing

Balanced blood sugar comes from pairing protein, fat, and fiber with carbohydrates at each meal and snack, eating every 3-4 hours, and choosing whole foods (like oatmeal with nuts, seeds, berries, and Greek yogurt) over processed ones (like a plain bagel or muffin). This combination slows how quickly glucose enters your bloodstream, preventing dramatic spikes and crashes.

Plate ratios

It also helps to be mindful of ratios when you're building a plate or snack — specifically, how much fiber you're getting relative to your total carbs (your "net carbs," or total carbs minus fiber), and how your carbs stack up against your protein and fat. As a rough guideline, research on satiety and blood sugar regulation points to aiming for at least 20-30g of protein and 5-10g of fiber per meal, alongside a source of fat. A simple way to picture this: fill about half your plate with non-starchy, fiber-rich vegetables, a quarter with protein, and a quarter with a starchy carb (like sweet potato or rice), plus a thumb-sized portion of fat. This isn't a strict formula — more a starting template you can adjust to what works for you.

Movement & skeletal muscle

Regular movement and maintaining muscle mass are also powerful tools here. Think of your muscles as a glucose "storage tank" — when you move, they pull glucose directly from your bloodstream for energy, helping bring blood sugar down naturally without requiring as much insulin. During and shortly after exercise, your muscles can even absorb glucose without needing insulin at all. The more muscle mass you have, the bigger that storage capacity — which is why strength training (when appropriate) and simple habits like a walk after meals can make a real difference.

Micro habits

Here’s a few simple habits to incorporate daily to help promote blood sugar balance.

  • Let carbs like potatoes, rice, and pasta cool before reheating and eating — this creates resistant starch, which acts like fiber and slows digestion

  • Eat in this order: veggies first, then protein/fat, then carbs

  • Try a vinaigrette-dressed salad, or 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar in water, before a carb-heavy meal

  • Take a 5-10 min walk after eating
